A portion of a multi-storey building housing a mall in Dharmatalla, Kolkata, suffered damage due to lightning, stirring panic among occupants and passersby. The incident, occurring amidst cloudy skies and intermittent rainfall since Sunday morning, resulted in a section of the mall's pillar collapsing onto the road. Witnesses recounted the thunderous sound of lightning striking the area around 1 pm, causing stones to fall from above and prompting fear among those inside the Metro Mall.
Thankfully, no casualties have been reported in the aftermath of the incident, which unfolded on a relatively empty road due to Sunday's holiday. Despite the absence of injuries, the sudden impact of the lightning strike left individuals startled, highlighting the potential dangers posed by adverse weather conditions. With forecasts from the Alipore Meteorological Department predicting continued rain and thundershowers across Kolkata and other districts of South Bengal until next Tuesday, concerns over safety and structural integrity remain paramount.
